Location, Parking Info for November | ‘Countdown’ by Deborah Wiles

countdownWelcome to the 1960s! It’s Dive Time for the Deep Blue Readers on Sunday, November 23, our final meeting for 2014.

Related to the ongoing renovations at Valley Bookseller, our meeting location this month is at Mara Mi, 201 Main Street S., in downtown Stillwater. We’ll gather at 1:30pm, our usual time, near the front of the store in Mara Mi’s cafe area facing Main Street. Free parking is available immediately behind Mara Mi, on the South side of Chestnut St. near access to the historic Stillwater lift bridge.

On Twitter we’ve been counting down through history to our book club discussion of ‘Countdown’ by Deborah Wiles, a book that’s been recognized as:

  • Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year, 2010
  • Amazon.com Best Book of 2010, Top Ten Middle Grade Books
  • Booklist Editor’s Choice for 2010
  • Best Books of 2010, The Christian Science Monitor

The first installment of her Sixties Trilogy, Wiles immerses ‘Countdown’ deep in the Atomic Age when John F. Kennedy sat in the Oval Office and the United States faced a challenging international crisis. Rich with music, pop culture, and political history, ‘Countdown’ introduces readers to 11yo Franny Chapman and her world attending school near Andrews Air Force Base. The second book, ‘Revolution,’ released in May 2014, is a National Book Award Finalist and picks up with new characters in 1964.

Thanks to archival footage and music available on YouTube, as well as online historical archives, it’s the perfect opportunity to bring this era to life for contemporary readers. We invite Deep Blue Readers to explore some of the links we’ve tweeted:NDLilacInn
